I just ran into another piece of work about glucose and cancer cells--research was published earlier this year indicating that some kinds of cancer cells kind of fall apart without access to glucose. This at least partially explains why doctors and researchers have noticed for so many years that cancer cells need more glucose than normal cells do--even Dr. Atkins remarked upon it.

Anyway, point is, in the article I found about this, they mentioned that whatever drugs they come up with, "the central nervous system [brain] needs glucose to function," so they have to come up with something that won't cross the blood-brain barrier. Oh yeah, what about brain cancer? Why not just put the patient on a ketogenic diet and see what happens? Oh no, we've gotta reinvent the wheel, even if it kills people. Puke.

Oh and did you ever hear that very young infants are constantly in a state of ketosis? I haven't verified it yet but it would be a very easy thing to test. ;) Apparently, some folks think that the reason babies are born fat is that they use their body fat to build up their brains in the first year or two of life. Well, ketosis is apparently part of that process. It is also a failsafe in case something happens to the mom--the baby won't starve immediately. Isn't it incredible how the human body works?Dana Seilhanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11749354913843954242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12333976.post-73898813424473807492007-09-05T10:37:00.000-04:002007-09-05T10:37:00.000-04:00It's my pleasure Orvette! You need look no further than the brains of children with intractable seizures to see how miraculous ketones are for brain health and function."

I could not have said it better myself. Numerous studies have pointed out the fantastic benefits of low-carb dietary approaches for brain health and function. The body of evidence keeps growing and growing. The results that researchers are getting, for many years already, with children suffering from epilepsy are nothing short of miraculous.

So much for the (constantly repeated) BS that the brain can only function on glucose... another one of these nonsensical lies that the late great dr. Atkins already debunked. In the presence of (an abundance of) carbs the brain uses glucose, yes. So what? What does that prove? Nothing. if anything, it only proves that one consumes too many carbs... that's all. The truly healthy (and truly preferred) fuel for the brain is ketone bodies. As is proven, here, once again.

Excellent and very valuable interview, Jimmy.Science4u1959https://www.blogger.com/profile/14032931049767819624noreply@blogger.com
