Gary Taubes Book On Fat Set For Early 2007
Highly-anticipated book from Gary Taubes delayed until 2007
Gary Taubes -- does that name ring a bell with anyone? Maybe vaguely so, right? If you are a fan of livin' la vida low-carb, then you DEFINITELY need to know who Gary Taubes is.
Let's rewind the clock to four years ago for a moment. Blilililililililililil....
It's July 2002 and EVERYBODY and their momma knows who Gary Taubes is after he wrote his infamous New York Times op-ed masterpiece entitled "What If It's All Been A Big Fat Lie?" that made national headlines. In that brilliant 8,000-word essay, Taubes laid the groundwork for dispelling the myth that fat is bad for your health and articulated sound reasoning in support of the low-carb lifestyle.
Predictably, Taubes was labeled at the time by the anti-Atkins crowd as extreme and out-of-the-mainstream of dietary science, but a funny thing has happened since he wrote that column. So much of what he clearly explained as facts in that little essay of his has begun to be confirmed by research studies and empirical data in the years since. Hmmm, how about that? Not only was Taubes right about what he wrote, but he was way ahead of his time.
That sorta reminds me of a certain diet doctor who sadly passed away before he could see the legacy of his life's work be confirmed as well, doesn't it? But there's no doubt in my mind that even Dr. Robert C. Atkins would be so very proud of Gary Taubes and the work he is doing for the cause of the low-carbohydrate lifestyle change today.
Fast forward back to the current time. Blilililililililililil....
The question to ask now is this -- what is Gary Taubes up to in 2006?
Well, that New York Times column he wrote in 2002 created so much buzz that he was able to land a publishing deal with Ebury Press, a division of Random House. He's been busy writing the manuscript for that book tentatively entitled A Big Fat Lie? : What If Fat Doesn't Make You Fat... and it was originally supposed to be released to the public in the Spring 2006.
But, as you can see from the book's listing on Amazon.com, it has not been released yet and is currently showing "Out of Print--Limited Availability." What's up with that?
To find out what is happening with this highly-anticipated book, I contacted Taubes via e-mail on Thursday to see if he could provide some insight about what's happening with his book. To my delight, he quickly responded and shared that he is working diligently to get the book out as soon as possible.
"The March 2006 publication date was never realistic," Taubes told "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" in an e-mail on Thursday. "At the moment I'm finishing up the manuscript, and my editors are still as excited as ever."
That's GREAT NEWS considering all the negative publicity that continues to plague the low-carb lifestyle. I am confident that this book by Taubes will send ripples through the health and medical establishment that will shake them to the core of what they believe. The whimpering and gnashing of teeth can almost be heard already! YOU GOTTA LOVE IT!
So when is this dietary masterpiece supposed to be coming out?
"I hope that by this time next year it will be out, but it's been a massive undertaking," Taubes explained.
Taubes told me that the book has around 2,000 references (you KNEW it was going to be well-researched) and the meticulous proofreading process is underway which can take months and months to make sure all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed. Taubes if fully aware his book will be looked at under the microscope for anything to discredit it.
"Even the slightest mistake will be treated as proof that I don't know what I'm talking about and so the entire book is misguided," Taubes noted, fully aware of the tremendous cultural impact his book is going to make.
He encouraged me and other low-carbers who support this incredible lifestyle to keep showing our interest in this dietary approach and don't ever lose interest in it, especially if it has made a difference in your weight and health.
Taubes asked people to check back at Amazon.com around the end of 2006 for a "reasonable publication date" for the release of his book.
The "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog will keep you updated on this story and let you know when A Big Fat Lie? : What If Fat Doesn't Make You Fat... is scheduled to be released. I will be writing a review of this book as soon as a review copy is available and Taubes has promised to give me an exclusive interview for my blog closer to the release date. This ought to be an incredible interview!
Let's show our support for Gary Taubes and rally around him when the time comes for his book to release. You KNOW those who oppose livin' la vida low-carb are already lining up their troops to combat Taubes on a personal level because they cannot possibly compete with him on his brilliant and well-reasoned ideas. Pray for Gary Taubes to remain strong and vigilant in the face of the adversity that will surely come his way. We will stand with him when the time comes.
Come this time next year, those radical militant vegans who rail against low-carb won't know what hit 'em! LOL! I can't wait to see that day come. Are you ready?

Aw, rats. I was looking forward to it. :( It's on my Amazon wish list to remind myself to buy it.
I can't wait for this book!
I hope it makes many ripples!
Ripples? Ha! It likely will be more like a massive tidal wave. I can't wait to read it. With 2000 well-researched references, it sure will make a difference. This guy really is one of the big guns. It's high time too, that all the misinformation out there was countered with facts. There is more like this in the pipeline, though, mark my words :)
I just checked with Amazon and the book will be available September 25, 2007.
Dr. Eades read a review copy and discusses it on his blog today. Important reading.
THANKS Marly! I updated the Taubes book story about a month ago to reflect the new title (Good Calories, Bad Calories) as well as the release date you mentioned.
I think the book will FINALLY be coming out after much anticipation. Can't wait and I hope to be able to do that interview with Gary Taubes very soon.
Gary Taubes was on ABC Nightline tonight announcing the book! Ta-da! It's here!
Yes, I know GearMaven. That's why I declared this "Celebrate Gary Taubes Week." :D
How can I follow a vegetarian and low carb diet at the same time?
That would be difficult although not impossible, for you need to have enough calories in your diet to avoid triggering the starvation response in your body. You'll probably have to supply vegetable protein in the form of whey and drink lots of olive oil to supply the fat you need.
