One good thing to come out of all of this is 'how bad' 'bad dieting' is! and 'how good' 'good dieting' is!

We can so easily get caught up in the craze to lose weight and lose weight fast that we can lose our sensibilities if were not careful.

There is no quick fix that is not dangerous and life threatening.

Those who sell same are 'dream poachers' who prey on the innocent naivety and gullibility of suffering souls, whether it's big pharmaceuticals or vitamin pill peddlers the word like always is 'buyer beware'.

It's your money there after and nothing more. It's also what ever they can get away with, and always with there attorneys fees structured and factored in.

In other words I or you or anybody could do a hundred million dollar scam or misrepresentation and pay back ninety five million in settlements and lawsuits and attorney fees and still have five million dollars.

These are actually small numbers at the 'big gun' level but it points to how heavily these promoters and practitioners will go in defending there incomes and profit potentials..

The Atkins reliability and stability shines through all of this!

Well, Jimmy, for me, her answers were evasive and led to more questions. She claims she doesn't like to talk about her life, yet she's out there marketing an admittedly stolen diet plan based on HER success, yet she won't prove it. She says her plan doesn't need a doctor to sponsor it, considering that its really Atkins and Stillman's plans.. and they are doctors. Crazy.

Ketostix are primarily for use by diabetics to test for ketones in the urine, as ketoacidosis can be quite dangerous for some diabetics. They weren't designed for low carbers to use to check for lipolysis. Yet she maintains her statement that Kimkins is safe for ALL diabetics - that's really irresponsible.

Add to that the fact that she admits to using a myriad of "pen names" and it just looks really bad.

I'll stick to Atkins and take my advice from a cardiologist and my own doctor over some mysterious woman who refuses to reveal herself anyday.

I'm glad you finished up the podcast quickly. Although it didn't serve to quiet the storm (and her answers in fact made it much worse), hopefully its over now!

I'm still reading your blog and I will continue to, just hoping to see an end to the cheerleading for kimkins.

Morgan, thanks for your well thought out comments. You can debate without attacking. Nice.

Only to clarify for those who may not know:

Ketosis: ketones produced by the body in response to extremely low carb intake

Ketoacidosis: occurs when type 1 diabetics have extremely HIGH blood sugar and the body produces ketones as an emergency effort to dump sugar from the blood

Ketoacidosis is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. Low carb diets do not cause extremely HIGH blood sugar.

They are totally different and commonly misunderstood.

Let's keep in mind that the RDA for carbs is 300 gm daily. Anything less than 100 gm daily is considered "low carb".

I believe that is something a medical doctor should discuss with their patients, not an online diet guru. That is one of my major issues with this whole thing, Kimmer.

You are not a doctor yet you continue to dispense what is, in my opinion, dangerous, irresponsible medical advice.

You said yourself in your podcast that you are not a doctor and that you have to continually repeat that for others - simple solution would be to stop making medical recommendations for others, yeah?

Laxatives daily? Even magnesium can cause dangerous problems. Epsom salt cocktails? For extreme situations only and to be used very sparingly.

Saying that anything is good for ALL of any category is very, very dangerous.

just for clarification -

What causes ketoacidosis?

Ketones mean your body is burning fat to get energy. Moderate or large amounts of ketones in your urine are dangerous. They upset the chemical balance of the blood.

Commonly, the flu, a cold, or other infections may sometimes bring on ketoacidosis.

Here are three basic reasons for moderate or large amounts of ketones:

1. Not getting enough insulin. Maybe you did not inject enough insulin. Or your body could need more insulin than usual because of illness. If there is not enough insulin, your body begins to break down body fat for energy.

2. Not enough food. When people are sick, they often do not feel like eating. Then, high ketones may result. High ketones may also occur when someone misses a meal.

3. An insulin reaction (low blood glucose). When blood glucose levels fall too low, the body must use fat to get energy. If testing shows high ketones in the morning, the person may have had an insulin reaction while asleep.

Hi Kimmer,

Jimmy, are you able to confirm for us that the commenter here identified as 'Kimmer' is in fact Kimmer of Kimkins.com (well, at least to the degree that you can confirm anything about her)?

Boy, Jimmy, you were right, this is a deeply divided subject! Thank you for doing this interview. I see Kimmer I bit differently than most of the other comments so far. I heard a shy woman who took an established diet, tweaked it to make it work for her, and lost a lot of weight. Suddenly she was being asked what she did, and she graciously told the details. I'm not sure why, but somewhere along the line people turned on her. Maybe it was that she valued her privacy, it sounds like a lot of negative comments are about "why all the secrecy?" It sounds to me like she just wants to help. Thanks for doing this interview. And thanks Kimmer for sharing.

I am a registered nurse. I have a bachelor's degree in nursing. A good portion of my job is diabetic monitoring and education for home-bound clients.

There is a difference between Ketosis, and Ketoacidosis. Ketosis does not affect the pH of the body as drastically as ketoacidosis, which accompanies critically high blood sugar levels, and low blood pH, which can be fatal. Ketosis is a normal function of the body to generate glucose and maintain blood sugars when there is an absence of adequate dietary carbohydrates. Ketosis is a natural occurance. Ketoacidosis is NOT a normal bodily process, and is caused by a chemical process dysfunction.

That being said...

Does Kimmers diet work? Absolutely. Do I think that she is a role model? Absolutely not.

Agorophobia can manifest itself in many ways, this is true. However if what Kim/Heidi/whoever is true, it also appears to have paranoid schizophrenic attributes. Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality, paranoid or bizarre delusions or disorganized speech and thinking in the context of significant social or occupational dysfunction.

If she can not leave her home to meet people "only at certain times", but then claims to be able to flit out and be a foster parent, CASA volunteer, and so active in community services... it just can't be the whole story. For one, a can't see that the Social/Family Services department in her state would place a child with someone with these conditions, which by her own admission are not well controlled.

The pieces just don't fit. If someone wants to Follow Kimmer's plan, then you are an adult, and can make your own choices. However, don't admire her, put her on a pedestal, or praise her as the next dietary messiah.

Blaming her inability to come out in public, meet with media, or any other "isses" on a mental disorder is offensive. Most patients are not so lucky as to be able to "pick and choose" when they would like to be psychotic. Very Convenient, Don't you think?

Jimmy, I understand that this is your business. And you have a business and bulletin board relationship with Kimmer with sponsorships...but are you actually following a Kimkins Plan?

Which plan allows for Chocoperfection bars? Not being mean, but Kimmer's attitude has been, "Follow the plan, or just go do Atkins" If you are tweaking it, is it really Kimkins, or is it Jimkins?

Thanks!
Brandy

Give it a rest, McLeoid. You are so far off base on the ketone argument, it's ridiculous. Eades wrote a great blog post about metabolism and ketones; I suggest you look it up and get up to speed on exactly what happens (and what doesn't) during ketosis.

But, to you, it's not really about the ketones, is it? And nobody on the Kimkins website is pushing chronic laxative use. Nobody.

Look, if you don't like the Kimmer plan, don't use it. It really is that simple. The folks who do want to use it apparently are having some superior weight loss results. More power to them. If you want to lose 1/2 to 2 pounds a week, be my guest. We won't stop you!

Here's some more advice: Go out and take a walk. The exercise will clear your head.

Superior weight loss is not the only marker people should be interested in. As Carol over at Kudos for Low Carb posted: How much fat can you really lose in a week?

This superior weight loss experienced with kimkins is a lot of muscle I suspect.

I am not personally really supportive of nor totally knocking the Kimkins plan myself, though I have *some* doubts and concerns.

I can 100% understand the worry folks have about potential for health problems with folks going on a very low calorie fast-loss diet like this. I can also understand that Kimkins is reportedly very effective for many people. And it isn't all that different from diet plans using diet shakes or very low calorie packaged meals, except for the some of the quotes that have been brought up.

I also understand the folks who worry about the potential for eating disorders, or disfunctional or unhealthy eating and all.

One of my concerns having listened to the audio interviews is "Kimmers" reluctance to meet with even you (for a hug, ..as you put it).

I am sure your grandpa (or someone from that generation) would tell you to look a man in the eye when you shake hands and to distrust someone who won't look you in the eye or give you a square and honest handshake. I have learned in my business career for 20 years or so to pay attention to red flags or things that don't seem right.

Kimmer's evasion doesn't sound straight and honest (to me), and the story about phobias doesn't really ring exceptionally true (to me). That's my impression. If she makes exceptions for her kids birthdays - you would think she might for a friend and busines partner as well.

My gut tells me she is perhaps hiding something, or something else is at work here that is fishy. Trading under so many ficticious names as a writer may not be unussual, but it seems like another red flag to me. As are the various avatars and pictures - though some could well be her.

I trust you know enough about what you are doing (nutrition and all) to make changes in your diet that are safe and sustainable, and to stop if it is negatively affecting your health. I personally think that the Aktins/South Beach or similar plans are more reasonable, healthy, and sustainable in the long run. But that is my "think-so".

Good luck in all your low carb efforts!! Thanks for all you do! Keep on and don't lose heart!

The other thing that bothered me in the audio interviews was the strange way she described the business not being in her name. That also sounded pretty "fishy" to me. Maybe you think differently but for me that also was a red flag of sorts. Normally people don't often do it like that.
