'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 163: Christin Sherburne On A Crusade Against Kimkins

Christin Sherburne leading a lawsuit against the Kimkins diet

Most people who have been following my blog for any length of time over the past year already knows about the Kimkins diet scam and the ongoing class action lawsuit that has been brought up against the diet's founder Heidi Diaz, aka "Kimmer." One of the leading voices against Kimkins now is a woman who was featured on the front cover of Woman's World magazine in June 2007 touting her 100-pound weight loss in just five months. But a series of strange events involving Diaz and some potentially life-threatening health complications opened up her eyes to the dangers of the Kimkins diet scheme.

In Episode 163 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," I'm pleased to share a very open and honest interview with Christin Sherburne who has been through a whirlwind of experiences over this past year, including being featured on KTLA-TV in Los Angeles, CA, "The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet" on FOX-TV, and even on ABC-TV's "Good Morning America" putting out a warning signal to anyone who has been tempted to go on the Kimkins diet. Christin has come under a lot of fire for being on the front lines of this battle against Heidi Diaz both from people who support Kimkins and even those who are against it like she is. Listen to her story for yourself and YOU decide what you think about Christin Sherburne's current crusade.

Christin Sherburne takes us through this up-and-down journey over the past year when she was in support of Kimkins because of her incredible weight loss on it and then to her fervent opposition to this diet plan that threatened her health and is harming the lives of real people even to this day. I've been privileged to get to know Christin over this past year and met her in February this year on our first annual low-carb cruise (she'll be coming on the cruise in January 2009 as well!). She really is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.

In the podcast, Christin opens up about those confusing days following her experience as the Kimkins cover-girl when she became the public relations spokesperson for the diet, how she ran into a brick wall when she asked Heidi Diaz/Kimmer to answer some of the questions that had been swirling around the Internet from concerned onlookers, the role Laura Dolson played in helping her see the fraud this diet and its founder is, her unending determination to expose this scam wherever she can to help protect others from falling victim to it, what's happening with the class action civil lawsuit and potential criminal lawsuit against Heidi Diaz, and the positive things that have come out of this entire ordeal that are impacting her life today.

Come back next week for a highly-requested two-part follow-up interview with Dr. Keith Berkowitz who will answer a slew of questions that came in following my first podcast interview with him a few months back about the subject of "reactive hypoglycemia" while on a low-carb diet. 'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 162: Zero-Carb Dieting With Charles Washington

Charles Washington makes a compelling argument for zero carbs

Oftentimes people who are unfamiliar with livin' la vida low-carb mistakenly describe it as a "zero-carb diet." Anyone who has ever read Protein Power, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, or any of the other respectable books about low-carb dieting knows that NONE of them advocate NO carbs. Not a single one. It just doesn't exist despite that pervading stereotypical view of what this way of eating is all about. But today's guest not only eating zero carbs, but he is also an active athlete running in half marathons.

In Episode 162 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we hear from Charles Washington, one of my moderators at the "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Discussion" forum, and he's proudly zero-carbing and loving it. After following the low-fat diet dutifully and losing a good amount of weight on it, Charles gained it all back when he started lifting weights. That's what drove him to learn more about low-carb nutrition, led him to my blog, and put him on a learning path that has him doing what he is doing today.

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 162:

There's one thing about Charles Washington that you cannot deny--he backs up everything he says with the facts from researchers, authors, and people who survived and thrived on basically a zero-carb diet. For someone who has not been trained in medicine or nutrition, he articulates his point of view clearly and logically. That can be difficult to pull off when you are suggesting something like eating only meat for your diet, but Charles does it.

He's been sharing his views on the zero-carb path at my forum with quite a response--it's the #1 most-read thread at "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Discussion!" Today's podcast is the first time many people will hear Charles talking about eating this way, why he chose zero-carb over low-carb, how Gary Taubes' book Good Calories, Bad Calories changed his life, what he does to prepare for a half-marathon eating no carbs, his response to Dr. Mike Eades' recent blog post stating that calories count on a low-carb diet, and so much more! I've been dying to share this interview with you and now it's here.

What's your impression of Charles Washington and his zero-carb diet? Were you persuaded that perhaps eating no carbohydrates is possibly a healthy way not just to live, but also a preferred method for runners and athletes looking for maximum performance? Tell us about what you think in the show notes section of Episode 162. Read more from Charles Washington by visiting LivinLowCarbDiscussion.com.

Coming up on Thursday's podcast--another one of my moderators at my forum named Christin Sherburne. This former cover girl in Woman's World magazine last year is one of the central characters in the continuing Kimkins diet scam saga and she wanted to provide an update about what is happening with the continuing lawsuit against Kimkins founder Heidi Diaz. You'll enjoy hearing from Christin pouring out her heart and soul about how this entire experience has changed her life.

'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 160 & 161: Low-Carb Nutrition From A Chiropractor? Meet Dr. Peter Jo!

Getting to know about chiropractic neurologist Dr. Peter Jo

If anyone can relate to the intense amount of negative feedback that people who support livin' la vida low-carb receive, then it has to be chiropractors. These outstanding professionals working in the field of alternative medicine have been mocked, ridiculed, and scorned by the traditional medical establishment. And yet anyone who has ever gone to see a chiropractor like I have been off and on ever since I was in a car accident in the 1990s will testify how AMAZING you feel after seeing one. Today I have a special two-part interview with a nutritionist and chiropractor from Bellevue, Washington.

In Episode 160 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we hear from low-carb diet advocate Dr. Peter Jo from Bellevue Chiropractic Neurology in the great state of Washington. I read an article that Dr. Jo had written online and was so impressed by what he had to say about nutrition that I decided to have him on my podcast show to talk about it. Little did I know just how incredible this interview would turn out.

I had only planned to go a total of 20 minutes with the interview, but Dr. Jo was so enthralling I kept him on for 45 minutes! You can access Part 2 of this interview with Dr. Peter Jo in Episode 161 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" by clicking on the links below. :)

Dr. Peter Jo is so well-versed in low-carb nutrition that I'm surprised I had never heard of him before now. I have no doubt there are more physicians out there just like him who espouse these same views--they just need to be given a platform like my podcast to be heard. One thing Dr. Jo brought up in the podcast was the relationship between the hormone insulin as well as the less-talked-about stress hormone cortisol on weight and health. I'd never quite heard anyone pinpoint BOTH of these before, so it was good to hear Dr. Jo talk about this. He provided some amazing and unique nutritional tips for controlling insulin and regulating cortisol, too. DON'T MISS THIS PODCAST!!!

2. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez

Check out this witty video tutorial from my podcast producer Kevin Kennedy-Spaien about how you can sign up for the podcast RSS feed, listen on iTunes, and all the other ways to access the show.

What are your reactions to Dr. Peter Jo? Does what he said about healthy living make sense? I was thoroughly impressed by everything he had to say and I invite you to discuss your thoughts in the show notes section of Episode 160 for Part 1 and Episode 161 for Part 2. Visit Dr. Jo's web site at BellevueChiroNeuro.com and send him your appreciation for the positions he holds on healthy nutrition through his contact page. This was an extraordinary interview and I'm so glad to have been able to share it with you.

Don't miss next week's podcast shows because I'll be sharing interviews with two of the moderators at my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Discussion" forum--Charles Washington is up first on Monday to discuss what it's like to eat a zero carb diet while running marathons (his Zero Carb thread is the most popular one at my forum!) followed on Thursday with Christin Sherburne who was the Kimkins diet cover girl in Woman's World magazine last June updating us on all the latest information regarding the class action lawsuit and actions being taken against Internet diet scam artist Heidi Diaz. Tune in! :)

He has been reading my blog for a while now and wanted to share about what he is using with clients to help them transform their bodies by reducing body fat, total weight, and getting muscular. 'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 158: Oh My Gosh, It's Low-Carb Cookbook Author Dana Carpender!

Low-carb celebrity Dana Carpender gets us caught up on her life

Long before I ever even thought about going on the Atkins diet to lose weight in 2004, there was a woman who was championing the healthy low-carb lifestyle in a series of bestselling cookbooks. She tried the conventional high-carb, low-fat diet and it failed her, so that led her to livin' la vida low-carb--and the rest is history! Of course, I'm talking about the one, the only Dana Carpender.

In Episode 158 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," Dana lets us in on what is happening in her life right now. She's got a new companion cookbook coming out this Fall to go along with Rob Thompson's The Glycemic-Load Diet and is currently dealing with a bit of a health scare herself with a fibroid in her stomach that she says makes her "look like I'm 20 pounds heavier than I am." And you NEVER have to worry about Dana coming up with an opinion--she's got plenty of 'em to go around!

In the midst of the taping of this interview with Dana Carpender, I shared with her about our upcoming 2nd Annual Low-Carb Cruise in January 2009 and she got so excited about coming. Since then, Dana has confirmed she IS coming on the cruise (WOO HOO!) and will be sharing in a seminar on board the trip down to Mexico. If you haven't signed up for the cruise, then you still can by clicking here.

We got Dana to open up in this podcast interview since she's so shy--NOT!!! One thing you'll never have trouble getting Dana Carpender to do is talk and she does it well. Hear her talk about the trials of the publishing world for a "low-carb" author, the dangers of low-calorie starvation diets like the Kimkins scam, diet soda, low-carb chocolate, and that recent "big breakfast" study that had all the media going crazy recently. It's never a dull moment with Dana around, so be sure to listen from start to finish.

'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 157: Meet Cindy Swanson, A Type 2 Diabetic Who Is Using Low-Carb To Control Her Disease

Christian DJ Cindy Swanson using low-carb for her diabetes

In Episode 157 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," I had the pleasure of interviewing a wonderful woman named Cindy Swanson from Rockport, Illinois who is a morning on-air announcer at a Christian music station there. Why did I interview Cindy? Because in 2007 she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and has been on a journey ever since to control that disease through diet. Listen to this newbie diabetic as she talks about how she reacted to this diagnosis and what led her ultimately to carbohydrate restriction. What an amazing story and I hope you are inspired by Cindy's story!

It's a scary thing going through hearing you have diabetes for the first time and Cindy Swanson is a great example of the timeline of what happens going through the anger and frustration about getting this disease, her plan of action for educating herself about this disease, and why she ultimately was led to livin' la vida low-carb as a means for controlling her blood sugars. Millions of brand new people go through this each year which is why I continue to talk about diabetes and low-carb so passionately. I'm so grateful for Cindy's candidness about her own story as she has lost over 50 pounds and doing what she has to do to beat her diabetes!

Talk about this interview in the show notes section of Episode 157. Check out her "Notes In The Key Of Life" blog and even listen to her on 101QFL Positive Hit Radio in Rockford, IL or online.

Come back next week on Monday when we'll have the incomparable cooking goddess herself with us--Dana Carpender! 'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 155: The 'Diet Detective' Makes The Case For Healthy Living

Charles Stuart Platkin laments modern-day health information

When I started blogging about the healthy low-carb lifestyle back in 2005, one of the first people in the media who I noticed was bashing against the low-carb lifestyle was a guy named Charles Stuart Platkin. His advice for food choices when eating out in a newspaper column he wrote was not in line with what my experiences had been about low-carb. Our disagreement came to a pretty hot boiling point and even asserted that low-carb is not for the long-term.

But after my blog interview with Charles and his subsequent decision to bring me on as a contributing writer at his DietDetective.com web site, he changed his tune about livin' la vida low-carb by becoming more aware of what he was saying against it. In the process, he and I have become very good friends despite our slight differences. Overall, he is as concerned about getting people to start eating a healthy lifestyle as anyone in the industry.

In Episode 155 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we hear from Charles Stuart Platkin as he discusses the sensitive subject of public health and what a dismal failure our media has been in disseminating information to the people who need to hear it the most. Charles is very well-spoken which is why he has been featured on radio and television quite often espousing making better food and fitness choices. Let him inspire you anew in your own efforts to start living better!

Charles Stuart Platkin discusses the state of health in America today, his change in philosophy about low-carb and saturated fat, his philosophy on what diet works for him, and so much more. He is committed to giving people the information and then allowing them to make the choices for themselves about what will work best for them. That's why he has a variety of writers at DietDetective.com, including yours truly. :)

'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 151: Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom--Charlie Hills

IT guy Charlie Hills has had a lifetime of weight loss wisdom

It's FRIDAY and my special "Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom" has sadly come to an end. But what a week-long event this has been and I appreciate all the positive feedback you have given to me about it. I'm always happy to share success stories with you because it might be exactly what you need to be encouraged, educated and inspired to lose weight and get healthy for yourself. In this final interview of the week, we hear from a man who knows a thing or two about the struggles of dieting.

In Episode 151 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we get to hear from author and humorist Charlie Hills who penned the most unusual diet book you've ever read entitled Why Your Last Diet Failed You and How This Book Won't Help You on Your Next One. This everyday guy personifies perfectly the typical person who goes on a diet, gets excited for a while, and then loses interest until the next wake-up call happens. It's a ruthless cycle that Charlie has been through and I'm sure anyone who has ever struggled with their weight will relate to.

Charlie Hills has hit on something that so many people overlook when they begin a diet and weight loss plan like low-carb. They start it with every intention of losing the weight forever, but somewhere along the way they lose their enthusiasm, get their focus off eating healthy, and basically give in to the desires of their heart (or stomach, in this case!)--and GIVING UP ON THEIR WEIGHT LOSS ATTEMPT FOR GOOD! Can anyone relate? Sure you can because we've all been through this rollercoaster ride.

So what can you do to beat this ruthless and seemingly inevitable scenario from happening to you? Charlie discusses in my interview with him about how you will still go through challenges here and there, but you can overcome the weight and health issues that come your way. I greatly admire that Charlie never gave up. Whenever something didn't work for him, he tried something else and something else until he settled in on eating a low-glycemic diet (basically livin' la vida low-carb!) that works best for him. His tenacity in getting there is an example we can all learn from.

We're winding up this encouraging and inspiring "Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom" with our second to last podcast interview with yet another success story who has found great success livin' la vida low-carb. We've heard from a Zone dieter, a weight loss reality show dieter, and an Atkins dieter. Today we hear from someone who hasn't had to deal with a great obesity problem, but she has had a need for controlling a condition she has called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). We know from the research that a low-carb diet is great for this and it has worked fabulously for today's guest.

In Episode 150 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," tune in to hear Rebecca Wilhoit whose life took a turn for the worse when she was diagnosed with PCOS. The weight gain and the fertility problems that this insulin-resistant condition brings on can be scary, but Rebecca was fortunate enough to hook up with a fabulous low-carb researcher and nutritional consultant named Cassandra Forsythe who has made a huge difference in Rebecca's life. Listen in and learn how her fitness focus has changed since she began this low-carb lifestyle change.

Rebecca Wilhoit is the perfect example of how this "Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom" is as much about improving health as it is shedding weight. Her life was changed for the better after reading The New Rules Of Lifting For Women and Women's Health Perfect Body Diet by Cassandra Forsythe, aka "Cass" as Rebecca kept calling her in the interview. You could really tell that there has been a strong bond of friendship between Rebecca and Cass and that has no doubt played a major role in Rebecca's success. I can't wait to share my interview with Cassandra Forsythe with you on June 30th.

The fourth podcast interview in this special "Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom" with Rebecca Wilhoit is a good reminder about underlying conditions such as PCOS and how they can negatively impact the weight and health of women. Do you have PCOS and use a low-carb nutritional approach to overcome it? We'd love to hear your stories of triumph, so be sure to share those in the show notes section of Episode 150.

We've had a great week of podcasts and there's one more coming tomorrow with Charlie Hills, the author of a very funny, but very real book about diets called Why Your Last Diet Failed You and How This Book Won't Help You on Your Next One. Of all the diets he's ever been on in his lifetime (and it's been a bunch!), only one has ever truly worked for him. Hmmmm, I wonder what it could be? Tune in to find out! 'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 148: Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom--Micah McCain

Micah McCain shedding the pounds on BRAVO-TV's "Workout"

During this special "Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom" on my podcast "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we're hearing some truly remarkable low-carb weight loss turnarounds from people just like you and me. On Monday, Sue Knorr told us all how The Zone Diet has been making a positive difference in her life for the past 12 years and counting. Today we have another guest who only recently learned about the power of the healthy low-carb lifestyle.

In Episode 148 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we hear from Micah McCain who is currently a contestant on Season 3 of the hit BRAVO television weight loss reality series called Workout. When this show first came out in 2006, I blogged about it as yet another program on national television to inspire others in their own weight loss efforts and it has flourished ever since! Micah is one of the people who has experienced a tremendous turnaround and I'm pleased to share my interview with him today as part of this "Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom."

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 148:

icon for podpress "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Episode 148 [21:18m]: LISTEN NOW | Download

Micah McCain discusses how his weight shocked him out of nowhere when he saw some video footage of himself. This is a subject I've blogged about before and it's true--if you wanna see what others see when they look at you, then have someone take a video or photograph of you and there it will be. It's a stark reality that hit Micah right between the eyeballs and made him want to do what he had to do to get that weight off.

Dealing with obesity his entire life, Micah needed an incremental approach to shedding the pounds. His trainer and nutrition adviser started him out eating more vegetables and fruit and then began substituting some healthy options in place of some of the junk food he was eating. The slow change in Micah's diet then took a low-carb turn when the sugar was removed first followed by flour, dairy, starchy veggies and even some fruits (because they're too high in sugar!). WOW! Pretty soon, Micah was full-fledged livin' la vida low-carb and he hasn't looked back since!

1. Listening at the official web site
2. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
3. Subscribing to the RSS feed
4. Going to iTunes--Click here to subscribe!

In this second interview in the "Week Of Weight Loss Wisdom", Micah McCain was quite open and honest about how he struggled with his weight for most of his life until he became educated about what healthy living is. What do you think about his trainer's incremental approach to change? Is it better to go slow and ease somebody into the low-carb lifestyle or to switch them cold turkey to low-carb immediately? This oughta be an interesting discussion, so feel free to express yourself in the show notes section of Episode 148.

Coming up the rest of this week is:
WEDNESDAY--Kent Altena (Bowulf) who lost over 200 pounds on Atkins
THURSDAY--Rebecca Wilhoit on The Perfect Body Diet
FRIDAY--Charlie Hills who authored a book called Why Your Last Diet Failed You and How This Book Won't Help You on Your Next One

Got someone you'd like for me to interview on an upcoming episode of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore?" We hear all about how The Zone Diet works to help people not just shed the pounds, but find incredible health. So Much Moore: Cavuto, Kevin, Oprah, Transcripts, & Forum

I like to keep the focus of this blog on the subject of low-carb and healthy living, but it is a blog written by a real person sitting behind a computer screen typing on a keyboard. So it's impossible for me to separate Jimmy Moore the guy who blogs about low-carb and Jimmy Moore the actual guy who does the blogging. We are as inseparable as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. :D

To that end, I want to share just a little bit Moore (sorry, I've never been able to resist that pun throughout my life!) about what's going on in my world right now. I can't tell you EVERYTHING or I'd have to kill you. Hee hee! Alrighty then, shall we update you on what's happening? Let's do it!

I ALMOST MADE IT ON FOX NEWS' NEIL CAVUTO SHOW TODAY

This morning I received a telephone call from a fellow diet and health colleague of mine (will remain unnamed) who was contacted by the producers of "Your World with Neil Cavuto" from the FOX News Channel about his reaction to the new Dreamworks film starring Jack Black called "Kung Fu Panda" portraying the main character as someone who is obese and everyone makes fun of him. Since this friend of mine was unable to do the show because of a prior commitment, he wanted to know if I would like to take his place. I said I hadn't seen the film yet (and really hadn't planned on it!), but it would be great to share some of my thoughts about the whole ridiculous "fat acceptance" movement that has crept into our society. So YEAH BABY!

I spoke with the producer several times this morning and in the early afternoon anxiously awaiting my chance to be on this popular afternoon cable business show. I even went through a mock interview with the producer to see how comfortable I was sharing my opinions on the phone to her as a gauge to see how I would do on camera. She liked what I had to say and here's just a little bit of my thoughts:

The bottom line in my mind is that obesity has become such an accepted thing in our society now that it's not out of place to make fun of fat people anymore like it is to use derogatory terms about race, sexual orientation, or gender. So a movie that shows a bunch of people making fun of the fat panda is part and parcel of what we expect nowadays. Is it right? Of course not. But that's where we are these days.

It does come down to the parents to make responsible decisions for their children and the actions they allow them to take. Fat kids don't sit around all day just stuffing their mouths with food as the stereotype (and this movie) portrays them. Instead, they probably feel guilty about eating and skip breakfast and probably lunch too and end up eating a hefty supper. Overweight and obese kids are ruthlessly picked on by their peers and that can drive a lot of kids to turn to food for comfort.

In "Kung Fu Panda," whenever the main panda character did something well, they rewarded him with food. Parents do the exact same thing with their kids giving them food as a reward when most children would probably enjoy other non-food rewards like a trip to a theme park, a favorite new toy, or even a trip to the movies. The responsibility for obesity isn't some mysterious disease, but the decision of the person who is fat. When you're talking about kids, though, that onus is on the parents.

Obese kids don't need to be told in a movie that they're fat--they know it already. As a former 400-pounder, I used to be the subject of stares from people who passed judgment on me because of my size. Of course, they had never met me nor had they been exposed to any of the reasons why I got to be the weight that I was at the time. That didn't matter because if you're fat, then it must mean you're a lazy slob who can't take care of yourself. While there may be some people like that, I don't agree that all overweight and obese people deserve to be characterized that way. It's just an unfair stereotype.

I was rip-roaring ready to go when about two hours before I was scheduled to appear on the show at 4:41pm EST, the phone rang and the dejected producer on the other end said she regretted to tell me that the satellite equipment for uploading video from my local FOX affiliate where my interview was gonna take place was busted. WHAT?! You have GOT to be kidding me! Of all the things that could have happened, this is what kept me from being on national television today. Oh well, life goes on.

The producer lady was VERY apologetic and upset that I wouldn't be on the show since I was a new guest they'd never had before and she was looking forward to having my perspective shared with their viewers. Before we hung up the phone, she did say that the next time they talk about something diet, health, and obesity-related, they'll be calling on me. I sure hope so and look forward to the opportunity. :)

MY BROTHER KEVIN IS BACK TO LOSING AGAIN...HOPEFULLY!

The last time I blogged an update on my brother Kevin's battle with obesity and health problems was in February, so I thought I'd share a quick message about what's happening with him. I just spoke with him over the weekend and he sounds pretty good. Since a few people took me to task the last time I blogged about Kevin because I would ask him about his weight, I have purposefully avoided even discussing the subject unless he brings it up. In our conversation on Sunday, Kevin said he's losing weight again. So I felt he was giving me permission to talk about it.

He said his girlfriend of six months recently told him, "You know, Kevin, I'd like you better if you weren't so big!" My brother is quite the sensitive type, so this really hurt him and he told that girl to take a hike. Why wait so long to bring something up like that?! Plus, Kevin revealed he had lost 40 pounds since February. When I spoke with Kevin before, he had gotten his weight down below 335, so I was thinking he was getting closer to 300 now. Nope.

I asked him what he currently weighs and he said he was DOWN to 346. Well, at least he's going down again...hopefully for good. I asked him what dietary approach he's using since the last time he was eating lower-carb. It was quite a shock to hear he went back to the diet his cardiologist put him on right after his heart attacks in 1999. What is he eating for breakfast? Hold on to your hats with this--Whole Grain Cheerios with skim milk, a banana, and a glass of orange juice. Be still my fluttering heart!

When I explained about how everything he was eating would lead to a major insulin response, which is made worse since Kevin is a Type 2 diabetic, he rationalized it and said that at least it was healthy stuff like whole grains and fruit. True, this is better than a McDonald's meal or some sugary pastry to start your day. But WOW! I hope he can stick with his chosen diet this time around because I'm afraid his chances of long-term survival get worse and worse with each passing year his weight remains elevated. That poor heart of his is doing all it can to keep him alive.

Kevin is a 40-year old man who can do what he needs to do for his weight and health. He doesn't need me telling him what he should eat or anything like that. I'll keep loving and supporting him because he is my one and only full-blooded brother. But I really don't want to see him die young either. THANK YOU to everyone who has offered up prayers for Kevin and I know they are what has kept him around longer than anyone expected. I'll let you know if Kevin continues to lose eating his low-fat, high-carb diet.

OPRAH CASTING WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESSES...YOU SHOULD TRY!

My readers are some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet. They send me all kinds of stuff about themselves or articles they've read somewhere. It's a neat community of people who all rally behind this message of livin' la vida low-carb. One of the things I've been receiving quite a bit lately is this link from "The Oprah Winfrey Show" requesting weight loss success stories. That's so thoughtful of people to think of me and encourage me to share my story with Oprah Winfrey. There's only one problem--I already have.

In 2005, right after I lost 180 pounds on the Atkins diet, I sent my story in to Oprah because she frequently features guests who have lost weight on her show. They acknowledged receipt of my request to be on the show, asked for pictures which I mailed to them just like they asked, and then I never heard back from them again except for a letter that said my information is now on file. Okay, great! But it's been three years since then and I've resent my information several times, including asking some friends and readers to mail personal letters about me to the Oprah producers. Nothing.

So, while I am flattered you would think enough of me to send me that link to the Oprah show, it doesn't appear they are even remotely interested in hearing my story. Perhaps my low-carb lifestyle has something to do with it since it doesn't really jive with what Dr. Mehmet Oz and Bob Greene have to say about a healthy diet. That's too bad because I think I have a story worthy of being on Oprah. Whether she chooses to give me a chance to share that story or not is up to her and her staff.

WHERE ARE THE TRANSCRIPTS TO YOUR PODCAST INTERVIEWS?

Several of you have been writing to me in recent weeks to inquire about my string of podcast interviews on "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." Here's an example of what the e-mails are saying:

I really enjoy your blog, and would like to see/hear some of your podcasts and YouTube things, too. However, I am an antiquated computer-phobe and don't have speakers with my computer. Is there a way to see a transcript of some of your podcasts?

What a GREAT question and there's a simple answer: no. While I am a fast typer and can record interviews with all sorts of people in the world of diet and health, the reality is I'm a terrible transcriber. I remember in 2006 when I did a transcription of my FIRST interview with Dr. Dean Ornish, it took me about a week and a half to write out those 45 minutes of raw audio for my blog. I'm even BUSIER now than I was then, so it would be next to impossible for me to get anything else done if I tried to transcribe two interviews a week. EEEEK!

If I had unlimited resources, then I'd pay somebody to do it. Unfortunately, the work I do isn't making me tons and tons of money, so I'm pretty much a one-man show (except for the production of my podcast show done by my amazing producer Kevin Kennedy-Spaien). Reality is reality--I'm just happy to be able to share interviews in audio format and look at it just like radio. Can you get transcripts for radio? Nope. I hate that because there is some excellent information in my podcasts. Maybe this will be the impetus to get some speakers for your computer and upgrade so you can access the audio content. :)

MY NEW & IMPROVED FORUM IS OFF TO A BLAZING START

Have you been over to see the all-new "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Discussion" forum yet? 'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 145: Carlson: Doctors Who Prescribe Low-Fat Diets Are Killing Their Patients (Part 1)

Dr. Carlson says doctors are engaged in a dietary "genocide"

I've interviewed quite a few people over the past couple of years who are ardent supporters and believers in the principles of livin' la vida low-carb for helping people lose weight and radically restore their health in ways they never even imagined could happen. Researchers, doctors, patients, advocates, authors and so many more have talked to me about how low-carb living is making a positive impact on weight and health and each person has their own unique way of expressing it. But never have I encountered someone with quite the background, verbosity, and vivacity of one Dr. James E. Carlson.

In Episode 145 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," Dr. Carlson unleashes his absolute disgust and disdain for the failed high-carb, low-fat dietary recommendations that have become the accepted norm for physicians to use with their patients. As a doctor, lawyer, economist, biochemist, and cellular physiologist, he is well-qualified to authoritatively speak about this issue from a number of angles and I am pleased to share an extended two-part interview with Dr. Carlson this week.

In Part 1 of my interview with Dr. James E. Carlson, you'll hear him talk about his explosive new book Genocide!: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!! that meticulously dispels the low-fat diet as the archaic dietary approach that it is for dealing with obesity and disease. Dr. Carlson realized after reading Drs. Mike & Mary Dan Eades' Protein Power that it's not the fat that's making people fat and sick, it's the carbohydrate that is driving insulin levels way up and THAT is the reason why we are experiencing what he describes as a "genocide" all with the blessings of the medical profession. He's hard-hitting in this interview, but is incredibly passionate about this subject as you will hear in both Part 1 today and then again in Part 2 on Thursday. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!

What do you think about what Dr. James E. Carlson had to share in this podcast today? Do you buy into the use of the term "genocide" in describing what is happening in our society putting people on a low-fat, high-carb diet? Tell us what you think in the show notes section of Episode 145. You'll DEFINITELY want to pick up your own copy of Genocide!: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!! because it will give you more ammunition in your arsenal against those who would tell you that low-carb diet of yours is harming your health. Get locked and loaded with the truth Dr. Carlson provides you with in his book. I have no doubt you'll eat it up!

Come back again on Thursday as I conclude my two-part interview with Dr. James E. Carlson on the next edition of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." 'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 144: Dr. Keith Berkowitz And His Low-Carb Hypoglycemia Theory

Dr. Keith Berkowitz reveals his low-carb hypoglycemia theory

Last week I shared with you about a bewildering blood sugar issue happening with me right now. My blood sugars actually DROPPED after a meal rather than the typical rise and then gradual drop that happens in most people. This jogged my memory about a guest blog post I shared about a year ago about this very issue.

In Episode 144 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we hear from the man behind the hypoglycemia theory associated with long-term low-carb weight loss success stories named Dr. Keith Berkowitz from the Manhattan-based Center For Balanced Health. Dr. Berkowitz worked with the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins and inherited many of his patients who lost significant amounts of weight. Now he's seeing those patients dealing with hypoglycemia and is implementing strategies for dealing with this.

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 144:

Ever since I blogged about my crazy blood sugar issues, people have been wanting to know more about this perplexing phenomenon. Dr. Berkowitz has been mulling this observational theory about reactive hypoglycemia around in his mind for a while now and is actively seeking a researcher to look into this for the sake of those low-carb dieters who have lost a lot of weight and then it just stops. This is something so many of us can relate to in our low-carb lifestyle.

Dr. Berkowitz identifies what this condition is, why reactive hypoglycemia happens even when you eat low-carb, and what you can do to overcome this. This isn't just some quack theory because I'm living it right now. Practical, easy-to-implement strategies in response to hypoglycemia are shared by Dr. Berkowitz in today's podcast and I can personally attest that they WORK! Since I've added many of the suggestions he recommends people with this do, I have lost over 10 pounds in the first week. I don't expect this torrid pace to continue, but it is very encouraging so far. See my menus blog to see EXACTLY what I'm eating, how often, and the composition of the foods.

2. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez

What's your reaction to what Dr. Keith Berkowitz shared in today's podcast? Have you experienced a hypoglycemic reaction to eating low-carb and feel "stuck" in your weight loss? Share your experiences with this in the show notes section of Episode 144. I appreciate Dr. Berkowitz sharing his time and expertise with us in today's podcast about this critical issue. If you are concerned about possibly having this condition, then you need to get a glucose tolerance test as soon as possible. This could be the answer you've been looking for.

Tune in again next week as I share an eye-opening two-part interview with Dr. James E. Carlson, the author of a fabulous new book called Genocide!: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You. If you support the high-fat, low-carb nutritional approach to weight loss and health, then you are gonna fall head over heels for Dr. Carlson! 'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 143: Low-Carb Lifestyle Living Large In Sweden

Low-carb activist Per Wikholm gives an update from Sweden

There seems to be so much pessimism about the low-carb lifestyle in the United States that it can sometimes make you wonder if anyone in the world actually understands the science behind this way of eating for weight and health management. Unfortunately, the "low-fat diet religion" continues to rule the church of nutrition with a vice-grip that absolutely refuses to let go. But there is hope happening right now within the country of Sweden on behalf of the high-fat, low-fat dietary approach.

In Episode 143 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we catch up with one of the leading voices on behalf of livin' la vida low-carb in Sweden named Per Wikholm. He is a molecular biologist who stays abreast of the latest happenings in the world of low-carb living in his home country and is a strong proponent of educating the people there about the benefits of the healthy low-carb lifestyle. There's so much positive happening over there right now with low-carb diets that it should encourage you that GREAT things are to come here in America soon, too!

You'll recall I interviewed Dr. Annika Dahlqvist from Sweden on my podcast show back in January 2008 when she was vindicated by the government there following a charge by two duh-duh-dietitians there who claimed she was harming her diabetic and obese patients by putting them on a low-carb diet. The ruling was that low-carb is "in accordance with science" and "well tried." In other words, livin' la vida low-carb is based on FACTS from the latest research studies and it WORKS in the patients who have tried it. AWESOME!

Per Wikholm gets us all up-to-date on the things that have happened in Sweden regarding the high-fat, low-carb diet, or what they call LCHF, including this 44-month study by Jörgen Vesti Nielsen comparing low-carb with low-fat diets for diabetics published in Nutrition & Metabolism, the reaction to this study from Dr. Dahlqvist, the revelation that the government leaders in charge of the new dietary guidelines are linked to the food industry (GASP--what a surprise! NOT!), and the real changes that are happening in the food purchasing habits of the Swedish people that reveal the LCHF message is sticking. You will be beaming with pride that this way of eating is not just surviving in Sweden, but thriving and on its way to producing BIG CHANGES in that country. If this can happen there, then I have all the confidence in the world we can make it happen in America as well!

Do you have any reaction to the things that are happening in Sweden right now as reported by Per Wikholm in today's podcast? I'd love to know what you think in the show notes section of Episode 143. You can also call our convenient new comment line at (206) 202-6516 and share your response. If you live in the country of Sweden and wish to respond or share your added insights, then please do. We'd LOVE to hear from you!

And a VERY special thanks to Per Wikholm for his willingness to come on the podcast show to share about the exciting news from Sweden. He did a fabulous job and I appreciate him for sharing. Read this op-ed column he wrote in response to the government leaders in charge of Swedish dietary recommendations who are deeply entrenched in the food industry. We need people just like Per in the United States who can call a spade a spade and challenge these hypocritical leaders dictating public health mandates.

Coming up on Thursday's podcast, I will be bringing you that interview I promised last week with Atkins protégé Dr. Keith Berkowitz from the Center For Balanced Health about the hypoglycemia phenomena that is happening with me right now as he discusses his theory about why long-term low-carb success stories deal with reactive hypoglycemia. Dr. Berkowitz shares why this happens in people who have lost large amounts of weight on low-carb and what you can do to overcome it. His insights have been invaluable in my own battle against this over the past week and I think you'll enjoy it too on the next "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." DON'T MISS IT!!!
