'Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show' Episode 67: Oh No, Not The Intermittent Fast Again!

Dr. Michael Eades encourages skipping meals to naturally cut calories

I've been getting a lot of traffic coming to my blog as well as e-mails from people lately regarding the concept known as "intermittent fasting." We first heard about this nutritional concept from low-carb expert and Protein Power co-author Dr. Mike Eades last Fall.

That's why I dedicated Episode 67 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" to this subject and recalled my own personal experience trying this "intermittent fast" for myself. The results of this experiment for me were quite captivating in ways I couldn't have imagined at the time--to say the least! Hear all about it in today's podcast:

I'm all for people finding new and exciting ways to help them reduce their weight and get their health in order. When I weighed 410 pounds in 2004, the Atkins diet was my chosen method for getting there. Over time, as your body adjusts to your new weight, something like an intermittent fast to help naturally reduce calories may be needed for weight management. Dr. Eades recognizes that which is why he supports this idea.

Lovin' this low-carb podcast? Get even more of it by:

1. Listening at the official web site
2. Going to iTunes
3. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez

What do you think about Dr. Eades' "intermittent fasting" and skip-a-meal recommendation for naturally reducing calories? Have you implemented such a strategy into your own diet? If so, how did it work for you? Good? Bad? Ugly? :D

Tell us all about it and let's hear what happened to you. It wasn't a pretty picture for me, but perhaps it's EXACTLY what YOU need to help kickstart your low-carb lifestyle into high gear. I look forward to your responses.

Plus, I'm happy to announce a special contest being conducted with our new sponsor Atkins Nutritionals. Go to the show notes section of Episode 67 to find out how YOU can win a cool prize to the first ten people compliments of Atkins.

Weighing in today at 225. This is a seven-year low. Next stop 220. :*)

As you may know, I'm doing my own combination of Atkins/Stillman/Eades/"Mayo" Grapefruit diet. This means:

. Low-carb almost all the time.
. Skipping meals when not hungry. In general, the less I eat, the less hungry I am.
. Occasionally eating all-protein, nothing more.
. Raw veggies including tomato, pepper, celery, lettuce. Grapefruit with protein at breakfast, sometimes at other times.

I listen to my body and make adjustments accordingly. Saturday, I was craving tunafish salad (including mayonnaise) with lettuce and tomato on a roll - and not much else.

I almost never eat bread of any kind any more, but I ate the sandwich that day. I split it over two meals, one early, one later in the day. I compensated for the carbohydrate content in the roll by eating little else that day - just a grapefruit divided across the two meals.

Yesterday, Sunday, I was working in the yard all day and it was very hot out. My appetite was very low. I had a grapefruit and eggs for breakfast, skipped lunch and dinner, while drinking lots of seltzer flavored with some Splenda-sweetened sodas. I wasn't really hungry throughout the day, but something was missing, maybe my electrolytes were becoming unbalanced. So late in the day, I fried a couple eggs in a little butter. I salted them well, then took some potassium and magnesium, all to balance what I had lost during my work in the hot day.

I'm also supplementing daily with fish oil and a high-quality multivitamin, also B complex plus C.

GREAT JOB, Gary! After 35 days on my new diet, I'm down 32.6 pounds.

My current weight: 215.4!

This is the lowest I've ever been as an adult, too. Keep it up, buddy! :)

Nope, fasting is just not for me either. I feel better when I eat, but eat less. Still having issues stopping when full but that is a life time problem with me.

By the way, congrats on your continued weight loss. Always enjoy the pod casts.

Fasting is not for me... drives me potty. If I want to restrict caloric intake (which I hardly ever do) I rather have several small meals spread out over the day.

Actually, there are some potentially protective benefits from fasting - combined with induced fever. Yes, you read that right: deliberately induced fever from (a otherwise harmless) bacterial infection. Ketone production together with such fever was used with some amazing successes in the beginnning of the last century to cure cancers and tumors in patients that completely had been given up. The success stories of Coley's Toxins as alternative cancer therapies come to mind. Several amazing and complete remissions have been documented.

However, as we all know, ketone production from ketogenic diets can much easier and in much more pleasant ways be achieved by implementing the induction phase of, for example, the Atkins diet.

And, in my experience, a ketogenic diet produces better results than actual fasting. The metabolic sequelae resulting from a ketogenic diet are very powerful.

I dont think calorie restriction is part of the Eade's IF plan... the idea is to fast for a certain period, but to then make up for the calories missed with a nice big meal.. in the end, you should be eating about the same amount of calories overall. the benefit comes from being in the fasting state for a certain number of hours-dont remember how many, but less than 24, I think.
anyway, I'm like you, I dont like it. I tried skipping lunch one day, never tried that again, hahaaa..

This was one of your best Podcast ever! Congratulations! You are making great strides, keep up the great work! Your courage in facing all of the issues head on no matter how hard or how difficult they may be is admirable. There is no doubt that you will solve this dilemma and in turn solve this dilemma for all of the rest of us at the same time. Commitment is what it's all about, commitment and the willingness to learn and comprehend and understand -- and the need to do so.

mr fritz is correct. IF was not intended as a weight control diet.Size of meals was not the issue. Eat breakfast and lunch one day then don't eat again until supper the next day.
