Manuel Uribe Celebrates 43rd Birthday And Over 500 Pounds Lost On Low-Carb

Manuel Uribe turned 43 on June 11 with a special birthday wish

The extraordinary low-carb weight loss success story of a former 1200+ pound man from Monterrey, Mexico named Manuel Uribe, aka "The World's Fattest Man" according to the 2008 Guinness Book Of World Records, continues to inspire literally millions upon millions of people around the world who struggle with obesity and feel like it is next to impossible for them to shed the pounds without going to great extremes. But "Meme," as Manuel is affectionately referred to by his friends and family, is proving it CAN be done and, more importantly, without the use of any surgery, diet pills, or other dangerous methods.

So far, Manuel has lost a grand total of 518 pounds in just 27 months by following the lower-carb nutritional plan created by Dr. Barry Sears called The Zone Diet. At 717 pounds, he still has a long road ahead of him in the coming years to get down to some semblance of a "normal" weight. But none of that would have even been a remote possibility had he not found his answer in livin' la vida low-carb. And the great part about it is Manuel is absolutely LOVING his low-carb lifestyle and sharing with others about how it is radically changing his life for the better.

What exactly is Manuel eating on his low-carb diet, you ask? GREAT QUESTION! Currently he is consuming a 2,000-calorie diet in lots of small meals (about six a day) consisting of egg-white omelets, fresh salads, chicken fajitas and fish filet in a bed of spring greens, for example. And despite the fact he is still an extremely large man, Manuel is healthier than most of his fellow Mexican countrymen according to Dr. Sears.

"Manuel's ability to lose more than 500 pounds without resorting to weight loss surgery is a remarkable accomplishment," Dr. Sears remarked. "His success can be attributed to the fact that he's never hungry because his all-star medical team is stabilizing the hormones that control hunger through diet and high levels of omega-3 fish oil with EPA and DHA."

Dr. Sears enthusiastically reports that Manuel is not at all at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, his blood pressure is astonishingly stabilized and normal, and his triglyceride levels are right where they need to be. SIMPLY AMAZING! Also, Manuel's resting heart rate is about 62 beats per minute, a level usually reserved for trained athletes. It's a testimony of the positive changes low-carb has made for him.

Although he's still very large, Manuel is getting thinner!

Despite still being somewhat confined to his own living quarters as he has been since 2002 because of his humongous size, that didn't discourage Manuel from celebrating his 43rd birthday yesterday with a few of his friends and family members who were there cheering him on to keep his weight loss going. One of the physical challenges that has prevented Manuel from getting out are his severely swollen legs that are immovable at this point because of some 220-pound tumors that have developed since a botched liposuction damaged his lymph nodes and nearly took his life.

But Manuel did express one birthday wish he hopes will come true very soon--to be able to stand beside his fiancee Claudia Solis on their wedding day.

"It frustrates me a little, because it is not easy to get out," Uribe told the AP. "We are in love, and this year my birthday wish is to be able to stand when we get married."

Although no wedding date has been set yet, Manuel is hoping to tie the knot with Claudia sometime before his next birthday. I'm sure it is frustrating for him to have the desire to get up and get out, but think about just how far he has come in such a short amount of time. It's pretty miraculous!

Manuel looks lovingly into Claudia's eyes on his birthday

Manuel would agree that this entire weight loss experience has been a HUGE gift from God who he has come to know as his Lord and Saviour through this experience over the past two years.

"It's a miracle I've got this far," Manuel admitted to Reuters. "I was going to kill myself two years ago when my wife left me, but God sent me excellent doctors."

Now a committed born again Christian who believes in the saving power of Jesus Christ, Manuel Uribe hopes to use this experience shedding the pounds to tell others about the free gift of salvation as well as the healthy benefits of low-carb living. Right now, though, he's focused on the job at hand--continuing to lose weight through healthy eating and moderate exercise that he can handle. His ultimate goal right now is to get down to 285 pounds by the year 2010 to give him a grand total of 950 pounds lost.

"I get lots of e-mails from people saying they are inspired by my progress and I want to get the word out about healthy eating," Manuel exclaimed about his weight loss experience. "I'm not against people who sell junk food, but you've got to be informed not to eat it."

Look at them guns despite his severe exercise limitations

The world record for weight loss by a female is 907 pounds by Rosalie Bradford and for a man is Jon Brower Minnoch who lost 924 pounds. So if Manuel can indeed reach his goal weight, then he will go from "The World's Fattest Man" to the "World's Biggest Weight Loss Champion." That would be quite a feat to accomplish and Manuel is just happy to have this opportunity that he never would have dreamed could happen just two years ago.

And none of this would have been EVER been possible had it not been for the generous time that Dr. Barry Sears has invested in Manuel Uribe putting this former half-ton man on his lower-carb Zone Diet program. And Manuel readily acknowledges this point.

"The Zone has saved my life, and I'm motivated to reach my goal weight by making the right choices about my health," Manuel stated.

GOOD FOR YOU, Manuel! Having a steadfast resolve to make better choices for your health is much more effective and long-lasting than some fleeting willpower. YOU CAN DO THIS and you've got tons of people cheering you on to great success, my friend. CONGRATULATIONS on the incredible turnaround in your weight and health and we'll keep watching you as you approach that goal of getting below 300 pounds.

Check out this amazing YouTube video featuring Dr. Sears talking about what it has been like to treat Manuel Uribe (and even seeing him throw in a dance move or two!), what exercise Manuel has been engaged in to help with fat loss, and how The Zone has been instrumental in his stunning success:

Bowden, Westman, And Eberstein To Join Us On The 2009 Low-Carb Cruise To Mexico

Meet Bowden, Westman, and Eberstein on 2009 low-carb cruise

A couple of weeks ago I was excited to tell you about The 2nd Annual Low-Carb Cruise coming up January 19-24, 2009 leaving out of Galveston, Texas on the luxurious Carnival Ecstasy ship. A group of 35 of us had a fabulous time in February this year on this exact same cruise down to Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico and it was simply amazing. We met so many people and built lasting friendships with people who are passionate about the healthy low-carb lifestyle. That's why we wanna go back again in 2009.

Just in case you are wondering, yes, you CAN eat low-carb on a cruise with a little guidance and we'll have three amazing low-carb experts on board to help provide that direction for you while you enjoy some fun in the sun on your low-carb vacation getaway. That's right, there will not one, not two, but THREE BIG LOW-CARB EXPERTS on board the ship providing seminars and one-on-one sessions with the people who attend. WOO HOO!

Dr. Jonny Bowden, Dr. Eric Westman, and Jackie Eberstein have all agreed to come on board this excursion with us to share their immense wealth of knowledge and experience about the healthy low-carb lifestyle. I've blogged so much about all three of these people that I feel like they don't need any introduction. But for those of you who haven't heard of them, allow me to introduce you to them now:

DR. JONNY BOWDEN, PhD, C.N.S.

He is the author of the must-have book for anyone going on a low-carb diet entitled Living The Low-Carb Life where each of the major low-carb plans are evaluated and compared so that you can choose the one that's right for YOU! Jonny's most recent books on Fair Winds Press have been very popular as well, including 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth, The Most Effective Natural Cures On Earth, and his upcoming release in June 2008 The Healthiest Meals On Earth, a cookbook featuring the healthy foods he wrote about in his first two books. This man is an incredible speaker and motivator on the subject of diet, health and weight loss as you will find out very quickly and will be a welcomed voice on this low-carb cruise.

DR. ERIC WESTMAN, MD, M.H.S.

As one of the world's leading researchers on carbohydrate-restricted diets, Dr. Westman has taken the knowledge he has observed in his study participants and is now applying what he has learned to his own patients who come to see him at his Durham, NC-based Duke Lifestyle Medicine Clinic with such serious health issues as obesity, diabetes, and worse. He is in my estimation one of the kindest men I have ever met in my life and is so very accessible with his time treating his patients like human beings rather than a statistic hurrying them through his office like some number. You'll immediately notice exactly what I'm talking about from the time you meet Dr. Westman and I'm thrilled to have him joining us on this cruise down to Mexico.

JACQUELINE EBERSTEIN, RN

The late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins was fortunate to have a nurse like Jackie Eberstein by his side for three decades as he treated patients with his world-famous low-carb nutritional approach. She really knows all the ins and outs of this way of eating so well that I consider her the foremost authority on the Atkins diet today. She was the co-author of the book Atkins Diabetes Revolution (with Dr. Mary C. Vernon) and has frequently defended the healthy low-carb lifestyle in columns and articles in the medical media. Anytime I have a question from a reader that leaves me stumped, Jackie is always there to provide her unique perspective and it is such an honor to have her join us on this special get-together on the Carnival Ecstasy.

Isn't this AWESOME?! And who knows, there may be even more low-carb experts who will be hopping on board this cruise coming up in January 2009, so what are you waiting for (you never know)? GO SIGN UP right now so you won't miss out on all the fun and excitement we're gonna have. Christine and I will be there as will Amy from "Eating Low," Christin from "The Journey On," Amy Dungan (Sparky's Girl) from "Healthy Low-Carb Living," and so many more. I think the best part about this year's cruise was all the NEW people I'd never met before. And most of them will be coming back again in 2009.

The original deadline for having the first $50 deposit per person was May 6th, but we have been granted a slight extension for those who have not yet signed up. If you sign up by next Wednesday, May 21, 2008, then you will still only be required to put down a $50 deposit per person or $100 a room (after May 21st, the first and second deposit will be due of $200 per person or $400 a room). If you get your first deposit in on time, then your second deposit of $150 isn't due until September 8, 2008 and then the remaining balance is due on November 6th. The total cost of this cruise is a very affordable $400 each which includes all your port charges and taxes. And the man who organized our cruise for us this year gave us a room credit of $75 that we could spend on anything we wanted on the ship. That was COOL and very unexpected!

I've been getting many e-mails from people telling me they REALLY want to go on the cruise, but they didn't know how to sign up. Here's how: it should be booked through Vacations To Go through our cruise agent Amelie Richards and you can contact her directly with any questions about the 2nd Annual Low-Carb Cruise by calling her toll-free 800-514-9986 ext. 7583 anytime Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm CST. Or you can e-mail her Amelie at arichards@vacationstogo.com. If you have any questions for our cruise leader, her name is Becky Regandy and she can be reached at xregandyx@yahoo.com. I appreciate all the hard work she put into this year's cruise and she's doing a superb job again for the one in 2009.

This will be THE low-carb event of 2009, so book your reservations NOW!

Get On Board NOW For January 2009 Low-Carb Cruise

Join low-carbers on the Carnival Ecstasy in January 2008

Remember the low-carb cruise I blogged about a couple of months back? About 35 of us low-carbers spent five glorious days together making Mexican memories we'll never forget. It was a fabulous time and now YOU have the chance to go back with us in January 2009.

Scheduled to leave out of Galveston, Texas port on Monday, January 19, 2009, the 2nd Annual Low-Carb Cruise will set sail at 4:00pm headed to Progreso and then Cozumel before heading back to Galveston five days later. We are expecting well over 100 low-carbers to join together on the 2009 cruise and you'll be happy to know it is surprisingly affordable!

An inside cabin per person cost is only $400.19, which includes the port charges and taxes. And if you'd like an oceanview cabin, the per person price is only $460.19. When you factor in this includes a five-star dinner every night, food at your beckoning call 24 hours a day, housing with cable television and movie channels, beautiful scenery on two Mexican resort destinations, and so much more, this is quite a bargain.

But, as all the infomercials always say, "wait, there's more!"

Yep, there's an added bonus to the 2009 cruise that we didn't have for this year's event: a special guest! Sure, we all had each other to meet and greet while surfing down the Gulf of Mexico back in February, but for next year's cruise I've been able to secure a giant in the world of low-carb living to join us--DR. JONNY BOWDEN.

Low-carb author and motivational speaker Dr. Jonny Bowden

I met Jonny in person a couple of weeks ago in Phoenix, Arizona and he's super-excited about meeting all of you on this Carnival cruise next January! Check out my podcast interview with Jonny from earlier this year for a taste of the awe-inspiring message of hope and inspiration in your low-carb weight loss efforts. Jonny is dynamic and will have you stand up and cheering when you hear him speak.

If this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, then the first deposit of $50 is due by May 6, 2008. Since we are all getting at least $600 a piece from the government-sponsored rebate checks that started mailing out this week, you've got this little bit of money coming your way. Then, your next deposit of $150 isn't due until another five months from now on September 8, 2008. The remaining balance is due on November 6th.

This cruise should be booked through Vacations To Go out of Houston, Texas. The cruise agent's name is Amelie Richards and you can contact her with any questions about the cruise by calling toll-free 800-514-9986 ext. 7583 anytime Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm CST. Or you can e-mail her anytime at arichards@vacationstogo.com. Or if you have any questions for the cruise leader, e-mail Becky Regandy at xregandyx@yahoo.com.

Are you gonna come cruisin' with us in 2009? Leave a comment below and let us know! I can't wait to spend some time with you next January. :)

Jimmy Moore's Photos & Memories From 2008 Carnival Ecstasy Cruise To Mexico

Christine and I on "dress up" night on the Carnival Ecstasy

I've always heard the old adage that you'll "need a vacation from your vacation" and now I know what they mean! Man, I'm so tired right now after spending about a week traveling to the port in Galveston, Texas, being on a five-day cruise with some of the most entertaining and fun people I've ever been around, and then returning home sunburned with a couple of cuts on my face (I'll explain in a minute!) and completely wiped out! I think Christine and I went to bed at 10:30pm last night and didn't wake up until after 9:30am this morning. WHEW!

But it was such an amazing week and I am so glad we had this opportunity. There were about 35 people from our group on board the Carnival Ecstasy and this was our second time on this particular ship--the first time was 13 years ago on our honeymoon when we cruised down to the Bahamas. This time was WAY better because we had people to enjoy the experience with and we kinda knew what to expect because of the prior experience. I've got nearly 200 pictures from the cruise, so CLICK HERE to see them posted as a set on my Flickr page.

From the time we got on the ship until we stepped off, it was nonstop luxury. People were constantly at your beckoning call and anything you needed was provided for you to make sure you enjoyed your cruise. I was so impressed that we had the chance to meet people on the staff from over 50 different countries around the world. What a cultural melting pot this was and they were very well-trained to treat the guests with the highest respect. I was quite impressed (and that's not easy to do since my standard for service is generally pretty high having worked in customer service for most of my life!).

Although it was vacation time, I did manage to get in a little workout time in the Spa area where they had elliptical machines and even some weights. But the ceilings were so low it was impossible to lift anything above your head unless you were sitting down. It wasn't a big deal because I didn't exercise every single day on the trip. This WAS a vacation, ya know? :D

In Cozumel, Mexico, Christine and I did the horseback through the Mayan ruins excursion and it was, er, um...painful to say the least. They should have warned us that we'd need a cup before hopping up on those horses. OUCH! Add to that the major sunburn I got and the fact that they gave away free beer and regular soda, but not water and diet soda, and it wasn't such a fun time. But I'll know better for the next one.

Okay, about the bandages, here's the deal. It was the last night of the cruise and I was up on the stage singing some karaoke of the Run DMC hit from the late 1980s called "You Be Illin'." Yes, I know a white dude rapping a song like that is kinda weird, but stay with me here. In the middle of the song, the CD started to skip and the karaoke lady was ready for me to step off the stage. I told her that I didn't need the lyrics or the music and that I'd rap the last verse on my own. And so I did!

When I was finished, everyone was clapping and I was so excited I jumped off the stage and my face landed right into the TV stand. A very SHARP one at that! Little did I know I had just cut my face open above my eyebrow and on the bridge of my nose and was bleeding profusely. I could tell something was wrong when everyone started gasping, but I was totally oblivious because I wasn't in pain at all. Everyone was passing me napkins and ice to stop the bleeding and the karaoke lady kept looking over at me to see if I was okay. I even got up on stage one more time to sing "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees before the night was over. But I crawled off the front of the stage this time. LOL! I bet nobody there will ever forget that night of the cruise! By the way, those cuts are already healing up very nicely. There may be some small scars. Battle wounds of some good times. ;)

Our stop in Progreso was cool because the beaches there are so beautiful and the stuff you can get as souvenirs there were about half the price of what they were in Cozumel. I loved being able to barter with these vendors and you could tell they do this all day everyday for a living. But if you hold out long enough, then they'll sell you the merchandise at the price you want to pay. NEVER pay the asking price. NEVER.

In Cozumel, we saw this heavy Sterling Silver cat pendant with personality and Christine was having a hissy fit over it. They wanted $125 for it and I declined. He then offered $100 and I declined again. I countered with an offer for $50 and he then said $55. We bought it! It was a pin in the store, but they took it down the road to their workshop and transformed it into a pendant in about 30 minutes. Christine LOVED it and it's a very complimentary piece to just about everything she wears now. :)

Dinnertime was always a real treat! Not only did you get to experience some of the best fine dining you could possibly imagine, but the entertainment portion had us all going each and every night. That's Ailsa from the UK whooping it up with Becky laughing and enjoying themselves. Like I said, it was loads of fun and I only wish that more of you could have been there to join in on the festivities!

Actually, you CAN join us in January 2009 for another cruise that we'll be announcing in May or June, so be looking for details about it. You'll be surprised how affordable this is and I am working on getting some special guests in the world of livin' la vida low-carb to join us next time. Start saving now because you WON'T want to miss this chance to mingle with your fellow low-carbers and have a most excellent time! See more photos and memories from the 2008 cruise in this thread at my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Discussion" forum. ENJOY!

Low-Carb Loving Manuel Uribe Passes The 500-Pound Weight Loss Mark

Manuel Uribe has now lost over 500 pounds since January 2006

If you were to hear that someone weighs 750 pounds, most likely you wouldn't be cheering and applauding that person in regards to doing something about their health. But when your name is Manuel Uribe and you were once dubbed "The World's Fattest Man" weighing in at a hefty 1257 pounds, you can't help but smile at seeing the scale flash 7-5-0!

Yes, this former half-ton man has been working hard using a low-carb lifestyle and nominal exercise plan to shed the pounds and save his life. He even set up a web site for people to track his progress and to be inspired by his amazing story.

In March 2007, about one year after starting on the low-carb Zone Diet by Dr. Barry Sears, Manuel had already shed over 400 pounds off of his body and has been pursuing breaking another world record distinction by this time next year--the most weight loss ever! As I reported last month, he's still at it and going strong in 2008 and has just passed another remarkable milestone--500 pounds lost!

Manuel has set for himself a goal weight of 265 pounds which seems a whole lot more plausible NOW than it did when he started this journey. He's prepared to take four more years into the year 2012 to lose the remaining weight--about 125 pounds a year. It's certainly not an unreasonable goal especially seeing how well the low-carb lifestyle is working for this man from Monterrey, Mexico who is getting a second chance at making a life for himself.

He's 42 now and Manuel is even engaged to be married to a woman who is supporting his efforts to lose weight and get healthy. It's a heartwarming story that you can't help but feel good about because he is proving that quite literally ANYONE--even "The World's Fattest Man!"--can make weight loss happen if they simply commit to a plan, follow that plan exactly and then keep doing that plan. For Manuel, the Zone Diet has him well on his way to enjoying a long and fulfilling life. Can you imagine the stories he'll be telling his grandchildren some day if he sees this thing through to the end? WOW!

Manuel told AFP, "I feel great. The doctors say I'm healthier than ever."

Indeed you are, Manuel, indeed you are! You're the world's healthiest 750-pounder ever! Keep at it buddy and don't let anything deter you from making this a permanent lifestyle change that will keep you around for many years to come. We're all cheering you on to the great success you deserve in weight loss and in life. GO GET 'EM!!!

Manuel Uribe Still At It In 2008 With His Low-Carb Weight Loss

Now that 2008 is here and everybody is thinking about weight loss and health, I thought I'd update you on a very heartwarming story about a man once dubbed as "The World's Heaviest Man" who decided to start livin' la vida low-carb about two years ago to shed the pounds and save his life. He is Manuel Uribe from Monterrey, Mexico and what an awe-inspiring story of dedication and determination to transform himself from a 1200-pound one-way ticket to an early grave into what he hopes will be a normal weight man within the next two years.

Beginning his amazing journey at the age of 41 in February 2006, Manuel quickly implemented the lower-carb strategies found in The Zone Diet by Dr. Barry Sears and experienced great success. He created a web site for people to help keep him accountable and follow his progress.

As of March 2007, Manuel had already lost 400 pounds--an INCREDIBLE one-third of his starting weight! He was hoping to lose about 200 pounds a year, but livin' la vida low-carb greatly accelerated this total. For a man of his size, the quicker he can lose it, the better!

In July 2007, Manuel Uribe earned the distinction by the Guinness Book of World Records as the "fattest" man in the world, but they are already watching his weight loss progress to see if in 2009 he will set a new record for weight loss. Maybe he will be able to duplicate the success of Patrick Deuel who used to be the world's heaviest man. We're rooting for Manuel to succeed!

He's lost a total of around 500 pounds so far and part of his routine besides his low-carb diet includes as much exercise as his morbidly obese body can handle right now. Here's a YouTube video showing a little bit of what Manuel does:

Anyone who says they're "too big" to exercise needs to watch what Manuel is doing. Sure, it looks like he's just wiggling around in the bed, but those pull-ups, twists, turns, and spinning work will build muscle, burn calories, and help him reach his eventual goal. I'm proud of Manuel and he's even willing to make fun of himself during this journey.

Watch these segments from the late night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!" to see what a good sport he is because he's now doing something about his massive weight problem:

And here's my favorite one of all:

At least he's having a sense of humor about all this. And I couldn't think of a nicer guy for this to be happening to. YOU KEEP AT IT, MANUEL!!! We'll be cheering you on at you work your way down below 700, 600, 500, and beyond! GO GET 'EM!!!

Manuel Uribe's Obesity In Record Books Again, Likely Going For Biggest Weight Loss Ever Record In 2009

When you've been tagged with the distinction of being "The World's Heaviest Man," it's not something you go around wearing as a badge of honor. Identified in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most morbidly obese man walking the face of this planet last year was a gentleman from Monterrey, Mexico named Manuel Uribe.

But he's been doing something about his weight over the past year that may win him another Guinness record--for the largest-recorded WEIGHT LOSS in history!

For those who don't know about Uribe's story, he sent out a desperate cry for help in early 2006 for someone, ANYONE to help him get his weight under control. Weighing in at a "how-can-he-possibly-be-alive" weight of 1,235 pounds--yes, that would be OVER a HALF TON!!!--Uribe was ready to begin his ambitious quest to lose 1,000 pounds to get his life back.

He was helped by none other than one of the most brilliant nutritional minds of our generation, Dr. Barry Sears and the low-carb diet he created called The Zone. Uribe was excited about livin' la vida low-carb and started sharing his story with the entire world through his web site available in both Spanish and English. The media has LOVED covering this story!

The most remarkable and encouraging part of this story is that the LOW-CARB DIET IS WORKING--VERY, VERY WELL! :D

In just one year, Manuel Uribe has proven his critics wrong and has already shed over 400 pounds--well on his way to reaching that lofty weight loss goal that now looks to be more probable to happen than not. WOO HOO! You go, Manuel!

If you check out the 2008 issue of the Guinness Book of World Records, then you will see Uribe's infamous fat boy picture in it. But don't be surprised to see Uribe popping up in the 2009 edition as the man who actually lost more weight than anyone. Wouldn't that be a hoot to see the "World's Fattest Man" become the "World's Slimmingest Man?" HA!

His weight loss as of July 2007 stands at 440 pounds and Uribe is almost halfway to his goal weight. The Guinness editor says he will be very interested in observing his weight loss progress over the next year to include Manuel Uribe in his book again--this time for the weight loss distinction.

The entire world is watching this story unfold and it's exciting to see a man like this taking the principles of low-carb living and putting them into practice wiith almost unbelievable results! We're still cheering you on, Manuel! DON'T GIVE UP, buddy, JUST NEVER EVER GIVE UP!
